On May 9th the Commission’s Teachers’ Circle alumni conducted a workshop on “Teaching Authentic Materials in ESL Classes.” Twelve alumni of the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program participated in the event, which was hosted at the Commission premises. Dr. Mayy el Hayawi (Stanford University 2010-2011), Assistant Professor, Alsun Faculty, Ain Shams University and Leader of the Humanities Circle gave the workshop. The workshop included the screening of a documentary describing a teacher’s experience in using authentic material such as card letters and pictures in the classroom, which was followed by a discussion on the challenges encountered by the teacher when using this approach with the students.
In addition, it included an interactive session where the participants used authentic materials to design an educational classroom exercise. Several alumni of the Teachers’ Circle contributed to the organization of the workshop, including, Ms. Amira Hegazy (Vassar College 2010-2011), Ms. Fatma El Zahra’a (Colorado State University 2010-2011) and the Circle’s Leader, Ms. Sahar Ramadan (University of California 2008-2009).
