Fulbright Alumna Becomes Director of Dar Al-Kotub, Bab Al Khalq
An alumna of the Commission’s Egyptian Scholar Program has become the Director of Egypt’s prestigious Dar al-Kotub, Bab Al Khalq(the National Library of Egypt). She is Dr. Laila Galal Rizk(Columbia University 1995-1996), a member of the Faculty of Al-Alsun at Ain Shams University. An institution founded in 1870 by Khedive Ismail, Dar al-Kotub has recently been renovated at the cost of LE85 million ($15.5 million). These new, state-of-the-art facilities house the institution’s collections of books, manuscripts, papyri, and periodicals. Included in the collection are rare manuscripts of literary classics in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish; early copies of the Quran; and maps. Included in the facility are three main reading rooms, an Oriental Languages Library, and a Rare Publications Library. The Commission is delighted that one of its alumni has been selected as the director of Dar al-Kotub. Our warm congratulations to Dr. Laila.
