American Studies Circle Conducts American Literature Workshop

On February 24, the Commission’s American Studies Circle convened a one-day workshop on “American Literature in Egyptian Universities.” The workshop was planned by two alumni, Dr. Areeg Ibrahim (Yale University, 2005-2006) of Helwan University and Dr. Mounira Soliman (New York University, 2003-2004) of Cairo University. Dr. Mounira began the workshop with a presentation on “American Literature in Departments of English” and Dr. Bruce A. Lohof, the Commission’s Executive Director, followed with comments on “Situating American Literature in American Studies.” Dr. Hala Sami of Cairo University discussed “Major Issues and Themes in American Literature” and Dr. Laila Rizk (Columbia University, 1995-1996) of Ain Shams University spoke on “Designing an American Literature Course.”

A final presentation, covering “American Literature Resources,” was made by Mr. George Scholz, the U.S. Embassy’s Regional English Language Officer.The workshop helped twenty faculty members from seven universities better to integrate American literature into their curricula.Through activities like this, the Commission shares the expertise of its alumni with other members of Egypt’s academic community.
