American Scholar Speaks To American Studies Circle
On January 22 the Commission’s American Studies Circle gathered to hear Dr. Augustus R. Norton, a Fulbright scholar visiting Egypt from Boston University, speak on “Thinking Beyond Failure: U.S. Policy in the Middle East.” A professor of anthropology and international relations at Boston, Dr. Norton is the editor of Security in the Middle East and Civil Society in the Middle East; his articles have appeared in Arab Studies Quarterly, Current History, and Foreign Policy. Dr. Norton, who spoke to the Circle’s largest gathering to date, is in Egypt under the auspices of the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia Research (MESA) Program. The Circle, whose January meeting was organized by Fulbright alumnus Dr. Osama Madany of Menoufia University, continues successfully to serve as a forum for exchange among the Commission’s American studies alumni and contacts.
