Commission Hosts Seminar on “Freedom of Press in Egypt”
On February 4 American Fulbrighters and others gathered at the Villa for a seminar on “Freedom of Press in Egypt.” The seminar, which was hosted by the Commission’s Cultural and Educational Program, featured a presentation by Mr. Hisham Kassem, World Association of Newspapers consultant on the Arab Newspaper Development Project. Mr. Hisham is a former Vice Chairman & CEO of Al Masry Al Youm (Egypt’s first independent daily) and Founder Publisher of the Cairo Times. “Informative, given from a position of knowledge and experience,” said one grantee. “…spoke spontaneously without notes in a pleasant and amusing manner” commented another. Said a third: Hisham is “creating great change and progress in the world of journalism, and I’m so lucky to have heard him.” The Commission’s Cultural and Educational Program sponsors site visits, lectures, and other activities to help its American grantees understand Egypt and its culture.
