Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Returns from Saint Xavier University
An Egyptian Scholar-in-Residence has returned from a semester at Saint Xavier University in Chicago. She is Dr. Zeinab Shahin, who has lectured in sociology at the American University in Cairo and at other institutions in Egypt. While at Saint Xavier, Dr. Zeinab taught two courses at the University’s Middle East Studies Program: “Arab Society” and “Gender and Family in the Middle East.” The program’s Director, Iman Saca, later wrote in a letter of acknowledgement: “the educational value of having you here is priceless.” Dr. Zeinab also taught at other institutions in the Chicago area. During a visit to the College of DuPage she dispelled many misconceptions regarding women in Islam. Wrote Dr. Zinta Konrad, Director of DuPage’s International Education Office: “Words cannot fully describe the educational value of this encounter for our students.” And at Moraine Valley Community College she made a presentation to the Global Education Program that, according to Dr. Merri K. Fefles, Moraine Valley’s Director of Global Education, “generated tremendous discussion from students and faculty, as well as community members who attended.”Collaborations like Dr. Zeinab’s Scholar-in-Residency promote mutual understanding between Americans and Egyptians. The Commission thanks her for her contribution to its programs.
