American Fulbrighters Tour Coptic, Islamic Cairo
On September 22 American Fulbright grantees and their family members enjoyed a walking tour of Coptic and Islamic Cairo. The program was sponsored by the Commission’s Culture and Education Program, and conducted by Dr. Chahinda Karim, Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture, American University in Cairo. It included visits to the Hanging Church, Abu Serga Church, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, Amr Ibn El-Aas, Sultan Hassan and El Refaie Mosques, and a walk through El Muizz Street. One Fulbrighter commented: “I found the tour informative and enjoyable…” Another Fulbrighter said: “I thought it gave us a great introduction to the city and to its religious history, current practices and culture.” A third one added: “Having Dr. Karim as our tour guide was a unique experience!” Through its Culture and Education Program, the Commission helps its American grantees understand Egypt and its culture.
