Chicago Graduate Student Conducts Research at Ain Shams

A Ph.D. candidate at the University of Chicago has begun research in Cairo. He is Mr. Joseph Yackley. Mr. Yackley holds a B.A. degree in philosophy from Northwestern University and an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies and Public Policy Studies from Chicago. He is in Egypt preparing his doctoral dissertation, “A Comparative Political Economy of Sovereign Bankruptcy in late 19th Century Egypt and Ottoman Turkey.” Mr. Yackley is conducting his research under the supervision of Dr. Gamal Abou Shakra, a professor of history at Ain Shams University and Director of the University’s Middle Eastern Studies Center. He is in Egypt under the auspices of the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. … a warm welcome to Joe Yackley!
