American Studies Circle Conducts Seminar, “Portrayal of the ‘Other’”
On March 10, the Commission’s American Studies Circle collaborated with the Cairo University’s Program for Civilization Studies and Dialogue of Cultures to convene a seminar on “The Portrayal of the ‘Other’.” Speakers included alumna, Dr. Inas Abou Youssef (Ocean County College 2006-2007), head of the University’s Women and Media Research Center, and Dr. Brian Edwards, Associate Professor, Northwestern University. Dr. Inas is the current leader of the American Studies Circle; Dr. Edwards is a U.S. Fulbright Specialist at the University.
During the seminar, Fulbright alumni, as well as other faculty members and students from the departments of economics, mass media, and political science shared reflections on the portrayal of Americans and Egyptians in Egyptian and American public opinion. The seminar was facilitated by alumna, Dr. Pakinam El Sharkawy (Study of U.S. Institute 2001-2002), an associate professor of political science. Through activities like this, the Commission shares the expertise of its alumni and grantees with other members of Egypt’s academic community.
