American Fulbrighters Visit the Fayoum
On November 22 American Fulbrighters and their families visited the Al Fayoum protectorate of Wadi El Rayan, located 100 kilometers southwest of Cairo. The program was sponsored by the Commission’s Culture and Education Program, and included site visits to the Acacia Tree, the Petrified Trees, the Escarpment, and the Protectorate of Wadi al-Hitan (Whale Valley). The Wadi al-Hitan visit was led by Mr. John Graf, a current Fulbrighter (University of Michigan AY2008-2009), who is conducting research on the site. “For many people like me,” one Fulbrighter said, “this was the first-ever desert expedition.
The trip was fun and educational.” Another Fulbrighter thanked John Graf in particular: “John’s tour of Wadi al-Hitan was interesting and excellent!” The Commission’s Culture and Education Program helps its American grantees to see Egypt and to meet each other to build new friendships with other Fulbright scholars, students, and their families.
