Commission Sponsors Seminar of “Freedom of the Press in Egypt”
On March 9 American Fulbrighters and others gathered at the Villa for a seminar on “Freedom of Press in Egypt: Past, Present and Future.” The seminar, which was hosted by the Commission’s Cultural and Educational Program, featured a presentation by Mr. Hisham Kassem, World Association of Newspapers Consultant, Arab Newspaper Development Project. Mr. Hisham is former Vice Chairman & CEO of Al Masry Al Youm (Egypt’s first independent daily) and Founding Publisher of the Cairo Times. “I appreciated the rational and realistic perspective that isn’t jaded,” said one grantee. “…excellent lecture – very well organized,” commented another. Said a third: “Mr. Kassem answered many questions I’ve thought of in the course of reading Egyptian media.”
The Commission’s Cultural and Educational Program sponsors site visits, lectures, and other activities to help its American grantees understand Egypt and its culture.
