U.S. Fulbright Student Conducts Research at National Academy of Arts
Ms. Hildegard Kiel, Executive Director of Dhow Countries Music Academy in Zanzibar, has reached Egypt to conduct research at the Higher Institute for Arabic Music, Academy of Arts. While affiliated with Dr. Alfred Gamil, Professor of Ethnomusicology, Ms. Kiel will pursue a study of the origins of Zanzibar Tarab. Ms. Kiel earned a B.A. degree in music performance at California State University – Long Beach in 1991, and is in Egypt under the auspices of the Commission’s U.S. Student Program. Prior to pursuing her research at the Academy, Ms. Kiel is studying Arabic at the Kalimat Language Center under the auspices of the Commission’s Critical Language Enhancement Award (CLEA) Program.
