Commission Hosts Seminar on Human Rights in Egypt
On April 15 American Fulbrighters gathered at the Villa for a seminar on “Human Rights Development in Egypt.” Hosted by the Commission’s Cultural and Educational Program, the seminar featured a presentation by Dr. Bahey Eldin Hassan, Director of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies. Dr. Hassan is a renowned lecturer and author of articles on democratic transformation and contextual challenges facing the human rights movement in the Arab region. He is an active member of various human rights organizations, including the EuroMed Human Rights Foundation and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. In 1993 Dr. Hassan received a “Human Rights Monitor” award from the U.S.-based Human Rights Watch.
“Very informative and … very generous in answering questions” commented one grantee. “I think the lecture was very timely and appropriate,” said another. “Thank you for scheduling it.” The Commission’s Cultural and Educational Program sponsors site visits, lectures, and other activities to help its American grantees understand Egypt and its culture.
