American Studies Circle Evening Of American Popular Culture
On June 8 Fulbright Egypt’s American Studies Circle gathered for an evening of American popular culture. Speakers included James Grippo, a Fulbright-Hayes grantee from the University of California – Santa Barbara, and Bruce A. Lohof, author of American Commonplace: Essays on the Popular Culture of the United States and Executive Director of the Commission. Mr. Grippo spoke on “Vernacular Uprising: A Comparative Overview of American and Egyptian Popular Music.” Dr. Lohof’s subject was “The Structure of Popular American Fiction.” The Circle is an organization of Fulbright alumni and other American studies specialists in the region. Its organizers include the Commission’s Senior Program Specialist for Alumni Affairs Ms. Safaa Abbadi, and Fulbright alumna Dr. Mounira Soliman (New York University, AY2003-2004), who teaches English at Cairo University.
